We visited Alambi Lodge in December 2006. Tim had spotted the lodge when on an earlier trip. Alambi, is small and quiet and beautiful. It is really a private home. So we decided to give it a try. We were extremely happy that we chose this place. The rooms are lovely, comfortable, and spotless. The food is fantastic; the hosts are wonderful and gracious. Birding on the grounds is great - tons of hummingbird feeders, kept filled, and lots of nice forest, too, including riverine galley forest. Of course, access to the entire Tandayapa
Road is right outside the lodge grounds. Jairo, who is an excellent guide, not only makes arrangements for you to visit the "Angel Paz Antpitta Petting Zoo" but he also takes you to Nanegalito, where Angel meets you and guides you to and onto the property (not easy to find, and not easy to navigate the dirt...um..."road" if you can call it that, in the dark. I would definitely stay at Alambi again if we return to Mindo.

"Alambi was everything I hoped for. Upfront I arranged everything with Jairo and he picked me up from my Quito hotel. After arriving at Alambi I did not only see 16 different hummingbirds on my first day! but I was also welcomed by the friendly owners. The room was very spacious and very comfortable. The garden surrounding the lodge gives a lot of room for excellent photography of hummingbirds such as my favorites White-necked Jacobin, purple-throated Woodstar, and white-whiskered hermit to name a few. Jairo also organized two birding trips to neighbouring areas such as Yanacocha Reserve and Los Bancos resulting in an amazing experience and my first ever Black-breasted puffleg sighting! Jairo, thanks again for a fantastic stay at Alambi.

I spent three extremely relaxing days at Alambi lodge in March 2008. The lodge itself is beautiful, I had a huge room with en suite shower, and a wonderful private verandah where I spent much time just sitting watching the constant activity around the hummingbird feeders’ just yards away. The sound of the Alambi river, close by (where I saw White Capped Dipper within minutes of first arriving) provides a very mellow backdrop and one could easily spend a couple of days in the vicinity of the lodge. My hosts were very friendly and accommodating, meals were excellent, and my only regret is that I did not learn more Spanish before I went so I could converse more easily.
I went on two day trips with Jairo, the lodge guide. The first day was particularly memorable, leaving the lodge very early in time to catch the peak birding hours at the high altitude Yanacocha reserve. The scenery was fantastic and so were the birds. Swordbilled Hummingbird, Great Sapphirewing, hooded mountain tanager, a nest building Sapphire- vented Puffleg, Rufous Antpitta, Tawny Antpitta and many more, and driving back along the Nono road produced Cock of the Rock, Turquoise Jay and some of the most magnificent scenery I have ever seen.
The following day I visited Rio Silanche and saw Pale- Mandibled Aracari, Chestnut -Mandibled Toucan, Rufous motmots, Guayaquil woodpecker, trogons, parrots, tanagers and some wonderful leafcutter ants.
I would recommend Alambi lodge to anyone who wants to stay in good accommodation, with friendly hosts, and some of the most spectacular birding and scenery you could imagine.

Alambi is a great place to see and photograph many species of hummingbirds. The place is practically overrun with Purple-throated Woodstars. I have made many excellent photographs there of that species and several others including Brown Violets-ear and White-necked Jacobin. Later and love,

Mak (my girlfriend) and I, arrived at Alambi lodge around 4pm June 1. It is very conveniently located, being the first property from the main highway, some 300m up the Tandayapa road, from the highway. It was my very first visit, and I was thoroughly impressed. The owners are great people. Very attentive. Really, some of the best service I've experienced. They offer many things, including transportation, for taking excursions to other areas, to broaden the species possible to see.
Alambi has trails at a lower elevation than either Tandayapa Lodge or Bellavista, river access, and a beautiful hacienda-style accommodation. The food was outstanding, they have accommodation for up to 6 only, and like it that way. Personalized service is made foremost. which is, again, highly recommended. Yet another great place to stay at Tandayapa!
